Alvin Zhu

A celebrated pianist-educator, Steinway Artist Dr. Alvin Zhu maintains a dynamic career across international stages, competition juries, and masterclasses. A top prize-winner in the West Virginia, Patrick Price, and Pittsburgh Young Artist International Competitions, he has performed with orchestras around the world at prestigious venues including the Sydney Opera House, Alice Tully Hall in New York, Beijing Concert Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall, Palais du Congress in Montreal, Stadio Olimpico in Rome, and the Amphitheater in Chautauqua. Zhu has recorded for NPR’s "From the Top" as a featured Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist, Pittsburgh’s WQED radio, Beijing Youth Radio, and Steinway’s SPIRIO catalog. As a juror, he has been on the panel of the 33rd Chopin International Youth, the 7th Liszt International Youth, the 2026 Singapore International, and the 5th San Francisco International piano competitions among others. He has given masterclasses at universities including Yale, Soochow, Texas State, Brigham Young, and Weber State; conservatories including Tianjin, Wuhan, Sichuan, Xinghai, Liu Shikun Arts School; and musical organizations including Steinway Beijing and Shanghai, Tianjin Grand Theater, and Lang Lang Music World in Hangzhou and Shenzhen. As an educator and scholar, Zhu is a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship and has researched the musical contributions of his paternal grandfather Gong Yi Zhu, former Chair of the Piano Department at the Central Conservatory in Beijing whose influence in China is still widely felt today. He has been a guest lecturer at the United States Embassy in Beijing, The Juilliard School in New York, Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and Soochow University in Taiwan. Zhu holds a doctorate from The Juilliard School, where he studied with Yoheved Kaplinsky and Julian Martin. Since 2019, he has served on the piano and music history faculty at the Tianjin Juilliard School—Juilliard’s only branch campus. He is also a member of the Tianjin Juilliard Ensemble, the university’s premier all-faculty chamber group.
